HCUK Support Groups

Along with our Facebook group for Barrett’s and oesophageal cancer patients, Heartburn Cancer UK currently have four affiliated in-person support groups, two are based in London, one in Basingstoke and one in Cambridge.

Additional Groups

Below are the details of some groups that are not associated with HCUK directly but may be of interest to you.

Guildford OG Cancer Support Patient Group

This group is run by Dave Chuter, with the support of the Royal Surrey County Hospital. Dave is a oesophageal cancer survivor, following an oesophagectomy over 18 years ago.

The group mostly meet in person at The Conference Centre, Holiday Inn Hotel, Guildford with the occasional meeting hosted on Zoom. The meetings are informal and provide those attending with the opportunity to meet and chat with others in a similar situation. Where possible members of the team at Royal Surrey County Hospital are on hand to answer any questions you may have.

OGC-Splash (Oesophageal-Gastric Cancer Support for Portsmouth and the Local Area of South Hampshire)

OGC Splash have a wealth of experience, patients and carers who have been through the surgery and are now ambassadors for the group.

They offer quarterly group meetings, and a designated telephone line, manned by patients.

Macmillan Upper GI Cancer Support Group, Wigan

A friendly and informal support group for people, and carers, affected by an oesophageal or gastric cancer.

Hosted by the Macmillan Upper GI Team, the group offers guest speakers, health and wellbeing events, information and advice, refreshments and raffle.

The group meet every other month, usually on a Monday afternoon 1-3pm, at St Peters Pavilion, Hindley, Wigan, WN2 3DN

Facebook Group – Oesophageal Cancer Awareness UK

A warm, friendly and supportive UK based Facebook group set up by Sarah, whose husband Graham passed from oesophageal cancer.  Sarah explains: “When Graham was diagnosed with stage 3 squamous cell oesophageal cancer in May 2023 we decided that a social media group was needed to support each other and raise awareness and have a safe space. It is aimed at patients, carers and those who are curious. From poo to surgery, all subjects are discussed and we aim to raise awareness as well as making people feel heard and not alone.”
