Patient Research Studies
The HCUK team are pleased to support those working in the Barrett’s oesophagus oesophageal cancer fields who are undertaking patient studies.
Historically we have supported many trials and research studies, and we are regularly called upon to help in the recruitment of heartburn, Barrett’s and oesophageal Cancer patients for research studies and clinical trials.

The current research initiatives that we are supporting are detailed below.
Heartburn Health
The Heartburn Health programme is exploring new ways to detect and prevent oesophageal cancer in people with persistent heartburn, indigestion, or acid reflux.
Best4 Trials
The BEST4 trials are exploring new ways to detect and prevent oesophageal cancer in people with persistent heartburn, indigestion, or acid reflux.
NHS Capsule Sponge Pilot
HCUK are supporting the NHS Pilot Programme where the Capsule Sponge Test will be offered in pharmacies including Boots. Launching early 2026, the pilot will see 1,500 patients in London and the East Midlands offered a free ‘heartburn health check’ at their local pharmacy. GOLF Study
The GOLF study is comparing two different types of surgery for reflux disease. Patients participating will either receive fundoplication or the insertion of the LINX device, and will take part in the study for 24 months in total.
Research Study about MDTS and AI in Cancer Care
Have you or a loved one been affected by cancer? Researchers are exploring how multidisciplinary teams (MDTs) make decisions and whether artificial intelligence (AI) could play a role in supporting cancer care planning. More information is available here.
Barrett’s & Oesophageal Cancer Patients Survey
Researchers at Queen Alexandra Hospital in Portsmouth are inviting people who undergo regular endoscopies (camera tests) of the oesophagus (food pipe) to take part in a new survey study. More information is available here.
Cancer 52 - Patient Survey
Cancer52, the alliance of over 100 UK charities representing less common cancers, has launched a new patient survey for people affected by cancers including oesophageal cancer. The anonymous survey closes on Friday 10 July. More information is available here.
Malnutrition Study
People diagnosed with cancer and malnutrition are invited to take part in a UK research study, by way of an online discission this June / July 2026, and will be awarded £80 for their participation.
