The Heartburn Health Research Programme

About the Heartburn Health Research Programme

Heartburn Health is the largest research initiative of its kind in the UK, and is exploring new ways to detect and prevent oesophageal cancer in people with persistent heartburn, indigestion, or acid reflux.

More than 70,000 people have already joined the study, helping researchers better understand these common conditions and how to improve future treatment and care.

The programme is supported by the NHS and Cancer Research UK, and is being run by experts from the University of Cambridge, Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, and Queen Mary University of London.

By taking part, you could help shape the future of care for people living with reflux-related conditions.

The Research Programme Aims

The Heartburn Health programme aims to build a community of volunteers, gather data on symptoms and treatments, and enable future studies that may lead to better detection, management and outcomes.

The programme is looking for volunteers who live in the UK and experience these symptoms to sign up to the programme, and a random selection of volunteers will then be invited to have a one-off Heartburn Health Check, using the capsule sponge test, at one of the mobile units.

Heartburn Health Checks are taking place in regional areas and anyone living in the UK in the age and sex ranges detailed below are welcome to join.

You may receive a text inviting you to join the programme, however you can now also self-refer to take part.

You can now self-refer to join the Heartburn Health Research Programme
