For John, from Verwood in Dorset, life has always been about balance – committed to his career with a successful financial planning firm, staying active, and enjoying music and travel. But in early 2024, a series of unusual symptoms made him realise something wasn’t right.
It had started subtly. Two years ago, stir-frying chilies triggered an unexpected choking reaction. A year later, during a circuit training session, he experienced reflux so strong it brought acid to the top of his throat. Then, at his Christmas work lunch in December 2023, he struggled to swallow, feeling as though food was lodged at the back of his throat.
By January 2024, while on holiday in Spain, the sensation returned – this time feeling like swollen tonsils were blocking his food from passing through. Still, he brushed it off, assuming it would go away.
Then, in March 2024, something changed. He suddenly experienced a strange sensation – a combination of a headache, mild chest pain, throat tightness, and dizziness. It was enough to make him visit his GP – the first time he’d needed to since moving to Verwood five years earlier.
A Diagnosis That Changed Everything
Despite his symptoms, initial blood tests came back clear. But a gastroscopy at Poole Hospital revealed the truth – a tumour at the lower end of his oesophagus and upper stomach. The diagnosis was stomach and oesophageal cancer.
John’s family history made this even more concerning. His two older brothers, both ten years his senior, had already been diagnosed with Barrett’s oesophagus, a condition that increases the risk of developing oesophageal cancer.
In September 2024, John underwent a major oesophagostomy to remove the tumour. While his recovery has been slow, his determination remains strong.
Looking Ahead
For someone who has always led an active lifestyle, the road to recovery has been challenging. But John is hopeful and eager to return to the things he loves – keeping fit, exploring new places, and enjoying live music and concerts. He’s also deeply passionate about his profession and is looking forward to fully regaining his strength.
John’s story is a powerful reminder to listen to your body and not ignore persistent symptoms. His journey shows the importance of early detection and seeking medical advice when something doesn’t feel right.
