Heartburn Cancer UK is keen to support the Health Technologies Wales (HTW)* review of the Capsule Sponge Test for use in Wales to help detect Barrett’s oesophagus. HTW are looking at evidence for capsule sponge tests in the detection of Barrett’s Oesophagus and early stage oesophageal cancer, and are keen to capture the experiences, views and opinions of patients as part of this evidence.
As part of that support we are circulating a survey for people to complete who have had the capsule sponge or the capsule sponge and an endoscopy to help provide supporting evidence from patients. The comparison of those who have had both would be useful.
If you have had endoscopy investigation or the capsule sponge test to explore either chronic acid reflux, suspected and/or confirmed Barrett’s Oesophagus or suspected and/or confirmed early-stage oesophageal cancer, we invite you to share your views and experiences of these procedures by taking part in their survey. Please note the survey closes on the 6th of June 2025 and is open to all regardless of geographical location.

If you are a patient who has experience of the capsule sponge or capsule sponge and endoscopy, please do compete the survey. If you can share with any patients who might be able to respond we would be really grateful.
The stronger the case the more likely it is that Wales will positively endorse the capsule sponge as a diagnostic test, which would be great progress for earlier detection of Barrett’s Oeosphagus.
